This month’s manufacturing spotlight is focusing on the success of Garden State Precast to expand its reach.

Background:

Garden State Precast, Inc. purchased Duncan Thecker Precast on November 3, 1999.  There were many benefits that would evolve as a result of the acquisition, including the fact that the new ownership brought approximately 100 years of experience in the precast concrete industry to the expanded organization.

Duncan Thecker/Garden State Precast has been successfully serving this market for the past thirty seven years. From its Farmingdale, NJ facility the company supplies utility contractors in the state with manholes, lift stations, catch basins, utility vaults, electrical junction boxes, box culverts, headwalls, water control structures and water filtration ECPO systems for NJDOT, municipal, commercial and private development.

Challenge:

The leaders at Garden State Precast have established a goal to continue to improve the quality of all aspects of its business and at the same time gain increasing respect from its customers and vendors alike. To accomplish this strategy, management engaged with many of New Jersey Manufacturers Extension Program’s (NJMEP) resources to help them as they set out a plan for improving their reach, client connections and overall efficiency.

Solution:

The company selected several of NJMEP’s educational courses that aligned with their own goals, developing a customized curriculum of improvement that included:

  • Principles of Lean Manufacturing
  • Value Stream Mapping
  • 5S System: Workplace Organization
  • Pull/Kanban Systems
  • Cellular/Flow Manufacturing
  • Total Productive Maintenance
  • Poka Yoke (Error Proofing)
  • Set-up Reduction
  • Project Management and Implementation of Lean Manufacturing

Conclusion:

With a commitment to life-long learning, the company has been constantly working toward achieving its goal of being recognized as one of the leading companies in its industry sector, known for its vision and recognized for its efficiency and effectiveness. While other organizations may remain content with the status quo, Garden State Precast has developed a solid reputation as a company that is always looking ahead, embracing change, taking risks and meeting challenges head on. Their commitment to actively seek opportunities to move to new levels through education is one indication of their genuine desire to  earn their high standing and good name in the community.
