This fall the annual SobelCo nonprofit symposium will focus on succession planning – and how to accomplish this important next phase of the organization’s life cycle most effectively.

A new date for 2019

Although this event has taken place in January for many years, due to the continuous concern over undependable winter weather and impending snow storms, we are moving to an earlier date.

While the location (The APA Hotel Woodbridge) and the timing remains the same, we are excited to announce that this year, our nonprofit symposium will be held on November 6, 2019.

The theme for 2019

After much deliberation and discussion with a variety of nonprofit leaders, advisors, influencers and volunteers, we have made the decision to focus on the common challenges and the range of opportunities that result when a succession takes place.  Whether the transition is at the Executive Director/CEO level or it is the Board Chair who is moving on, the situation can be handled efficiently and smoothly – or it can be conducted in such a way as to lead to upheaval and confusion.  In some of the most extreme instances, a change in leadership can even result in the temporary demise or the permanent downfall of an organization.

As more and more Baby Boomers prepare to exit the workforce, impacting both corporate and nonprofit communities alike, many organizations will be experiencing significant turnover at the top. Quite often the current leadership team has been in place for several years, earning a high profile reputation and iconic status within the organization and within the community.  In these instances, the successors have big shoes to fill as they work to achieve the same level of respect and admiration that their predecessors earned over time.

To address these issues, we have assembled a panel comprised of well-known New Jersey nonprofit leaders who will share their own experiences and lessons learned in the trenches as they discuss some of the most effective approaches to defuse and address these emotionally-charged scenarios.

The solution to succession planning is never one-size-fits-all!

Some organizations may opt for an interim CEO to serve as a bridge to a final selection, others will leverage existing relationships, while some may seek a fresh start by identifying a new leader from out of town.

There is no right or wrong answer – but one thing we know for sure: you will gain great value from attending this important conversation! We hope you will join us and invite your key board members and volunteers to attend as well. It will provide you with a n extensive list of talking points, ideas and approaches to tap into at your own organization.
